Helston County Secondary School, which formerly occupied the CAST building, was commonly known as ‘Green School’ because of its dark green and grey uniform.

In 2015 we worked with the staff of the oral history company Azook to collect images and stories about the school, with a special emphasis on the period from the end of the fifties until the school closed in 1972. During this time the school’s pupils came from the Lizard villages, travelling in daily by school bus.

Introduced by broadcaster David George, the film ‘Green School Memories’ combines interviews with former pupils and teachers with images of school life. The film will be screened at set times daily and our spacious black box screening space will be laid out to accommodate two distanced groups of up to six people, as well as singles and pairs. Screenings are free and there’s no need to book, but if you would like to reserve a group of places on a particular day, or book a table in our licensed Café please email [email protected] or call 01326 569267 during open hours. To celebrate our reopening the Café will be serving cream teas as well as their usual delicious breakfast and lunch menu, with tables available inside or on the sheltered terrace.

A collection of images and recordings relating to the Green School history project are now freely available on the online archive cornishmemory.com. The project was supported by grants from the National Heritage Lottery Fund and from Helston Town Council.

To book please email [email protected] or call 01326 569267 during open hours.
