The sixth edition of the Cornwall Workshop will be led by British artist Elizabeth Price. This week-long residential workshop for artists is organised by CAST, hosted at Kestle Barton on the Lizard peninsula and supported by funding from Arts Council England. Like its predecessors, this will be an intensive working retreat for artists.

The 2022 workshop offers a space in which to explore three ideas that are embedded in Elizabeth Price’s work and in her practice as an artist: assembly, archive and place.

Price describes her interest in: ‘The assembly of different kinds of things: the creation of heterogeneous assemblies, such as the ‘exquisite corpse’ of Surrealism, as well as bricolage, collage, literary montage or cut-up, and certain kinds of concrete poetry.’ She imagines how one might approach the archive not only by intervening in it but also by inventing stories and images that will ‘summon into the visible the contours of things permanently erased’. During the workshop week she proposes to draw upon local cultural and political histories and their manifestations in local archives and collections and use the ideas of assembly and archive ‘to disassemble stable or singular ideals of place’.

Who can apply?

The workshop is designed primarily to provide opportunities for artists, curators and writers resident in Cornwall and the South West, but candidates from outside the region may apply if they have a special interest in the South West and have knowledge and experience that could be of particular relevance to this workshop.

Previous workshops are described in accounts by Abigail Reynolds, Simon Bayliss, Liam Jolly and Mollie Goldstrom in the archive of the Cornwall Workshop website.

The workshop will accommodate twelve participants selected from the open call. Please visit thecornwallworkshop.com for further details on how to apply and to download the application form.
