CAST Café Geographic series welcomes artist, quarry worker and cultural geographer David Paton. David has been working with stone since 1995. In 2015 he completed a PhD in Cultural Geography at the University of Exeter focusing on his job as an apprentice quarry worker and mason at Trenoweth Granite Quarry. His current work combines artisanal granite work with creative research in a practice that remains rooted in granite working methods.
‘Tracing Granite’ is an umbrella name for a series of current granite related projects. These include In search of a white cross, a five-day field trip David is developing as part of Groundwork, a carving of St Piran for La Vallée des Saints and a granite masonry training scheme scheduled for spring 2018. It also includes postdoctoral work for the National Trust.
David will discuss how his work has developed over the past decade covering current and recent projects, and will show films and still images that explore both the creative and practical aspects of working with granite.
