The fourth Cornwall Workshop will be led by the distinguished British artist Christina Mackie. The workshop is organised by CAST as part of the preparation for Groundwork, which opens to the public in May 2018. Like its predecessors, this will be a week-long intensive residential workshop for artists, curators and writers based in Cornwall and the South West, hosted at Kestle Barton on the Lizard peninsula. Aspects of the programme will take place at the CAST building in Helston.

The workshop will provide a space for discussion, debate and the sharing of ideas around producing, exhibiting and experiencing art. We hope that it will also contribute to the development of field trips and activities for the Groundwork programme in 2018.

Christina Mackie (b.1956, Oxford) is an internationally celebrated artist, best known for her composite sculptural installations, which unite disparate elements in a state of temporary synthesis. The workshop programme will be shaped by her interest in materials and processes, and in observing and activating the subtle chains of association through which things relate to one another – intuitively or formally.

Who can apply?

The workshop is designed to provide opportunities for artists, curators and writers who are resident in Cornwall and the South West. It will also contribute to the development of the Groundwork programme in 2018. We hope that participants will bring ideas that can be shared and developed with workshop participants. Candidates from outside the region may apply if they have a special interest in and relationship with the South West and have knowledge and experience that could be of particular benefit to the workshop.

Previous workshops are described in accounts by Abigail Reynolds and Simon Bayliss in the archive of The Cornwall Workshop website.

The workshop will accommodate twelve participants selected from the open call. This year’s selection panel includes Teresa Gleadowe, independent curator and writer, and Christina Mackie.

The opening date for applications is 7 August. Please visit thecornwallworkshop.com for further details on how to apply and to download the application form. Completed applications must be received by email no later than 5pm on Friday 8 September. Successful applicants will be informed by email by Friday 15 September. For any additional enquiries email [email protected]
